Nutrition Month Focuses On Need For Healthy Diet

Published by Jennifer at 6:45 pm under Nutrition

In the early 1970’s the government recognized the need to provide information on healthy meal planning, and the idea for a nutrition month was born in 1973. The concept was to put an emphasis on eating healthy foods and only the right foods to help with what was then considered a potential problem of obesity. Sponsored nationally by the American Dietetic Association, the aim of nutrition month is to promote healthy choices in the foods consumed.

Over the years many organizations jumped on the eat healthy bandwagon, joining the American Dietetic Association in the nutrition month, typically held in March, to provide information healthy eating and the benefits of making the right decision in their choice of foods. The U.S. military along with many major corporations send out eating tips of day and will hold contests for their employees, recognizing that a healthy diet can improve the health of their workers and help reduce medical costs.

Over the years the focus on eating right offered during nutrition month has helped push the need for a healthy diet plan into many different and far-reaching areas. With today’s focus on health and the dangers of obesity, nutrition month provides information for everyone who wants to lose weight and still eat healthy.

Slogans Indicate Trends Of The Times

Every year the National nutrition month will have a new slogan, which appears on all advertising and graphics used by the American Dietetic Association to promote their many events. The slogans tend to be commented with the popular trends of that particular year and help to draw attention to the organization’s goal. Over the years celebrities have served as spokespersons for nutrition month, hoping to attract more attention for the need of a healthier diet.

After a push during nutrition month, many school recognized that their lunch programs may be contributing to obesity in young people, resulting in many school districts changing their menus to a healthier choice of foods. Many other schools removed vending machines from the areas with student access, especially soda machines, after information presented during nutrition month showed them to present health opportunities for the younger students.

Regardless of the success of the programs presented during nutrition month and the quality of the information presented, professionals are quick to point out that nutrition is not something that needs to be followed only 30 days a year. Nutrition is not a diet plan or an occasional diet fad, rather it is a way of life for continued health.
