Top tips to maintain a balanced lifestyle

8_keytipsbalance.jpg(NC)-All of us strive to lead healthy and active lifestyles and it’s not as hard as we may think. A few small changes can make a big difference to the way you look and feel. Here are the top five simple ways to help you lead a balanced life:

1. Plan Meals Ahead – Bring your lunch to work. You’ll save money and eat healthier. Also, keep your energy levels up by eating regularly. Have healthy snacks available for when hunger strikes. Starving yourself just causes you to overeat.

2. Watch the Carbs – Carbohydrates are important for providing energy in a healthy diet, but it’s important not to overdo it. If your meals typically include more than one starch, replace the extra starch with vegetables. Be aware of how much added sugar you use throughout the day – in coffee/tea, on cereal or fruit.

3. Wherever Possible, Walk – Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Get off the bus one stop before your own. Take a walk with the family after dinner. These little changes throughout the day add up to make you feel better and help you burn calories.

4. Treat Yourself – Restrictive diets don’t work for many people because they’re challenging to stick to. Indulging yourself every so often is normal and healthy. Try making your own sweet treats with a sugar substitute, such as Splenda, which has the great taste you love, but with less sugar and calories. Cutting out 1 teaspoon of sugar saves 16 calories.

5. Stay Hydrated – Ensuring our bodies are properly hydrated is key to staying healthy and feeling good. Drink at least the recommended amount of eight glasses of water a day.
